Prayer for the Papal Visit to the UK
16th – 19th September 2010
God of truth and love,
your Son, Jesus Christ, stands as the light
to all who seek you with a sincere heart.
As we strive with your grace
to be faithful in word and deed,
may we reflect the kindly light of Christ
and offer a witness of hope and peace to all.
We pray for Pope Benedict
and look forward with joy
to his forthcoming visit to our countries.
May he be a witness to the unity and hope
which is your will for all people.
We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Attendance Champions

Georgina Cox (Year 11), Herbert Dela Cruz (10), Zachery Hall (7) and Gloriette Mpwena (8) won Leeds United tickets and HMV gift cards in the Education Leeds competition Give It 100 per cent which aims to promote the importance of good attendance at school. Nearly 500 MSM students could enter because they achieved a perfect 100% attendance record.
Regular school attendance is vital. Research shows that missing just 17 days in a single school year can lead to a one-grade drop at GCSE. |
It adds up to a new World Record for MSM

1,133,246 students and 56,082 schools from 235 countries united to set a new world record by correctly answering 479,732,613 questions on World Maths Day. MSM record-breakers were Year 7 pupils (from left) Jean-Emmanuel Kayij, Nicole Macdonald and Bailey Rawson-Spink |
Year 11 GEP completed a sponsored walk from Ilkley to Saltaire in aid of Martin House Hospice.

Teenage Schoolgirl Heroine to the Rescue

|
Fifteen-year-old, Year 11 student, Danielle Baker was on her way home from school when she found herself one of the first on the scene of a serious traffic accident.
The victim, who had been knocked down by a bus as it pulled away from a stop, turned out to be eleven-year-old Lesley Opoku who is in Year 7.
“I just put into practice everything I had learned in school. You need to think clearly and quickly, consider the circumstances and act decisively. The last thing I expected was a reward. The main thing is that Lesley has made a full recovery and I am proud to have played a part in that.”
Leeds City Credit Union, which provides financial services for the people of Leeds, was so impressed with Danielle that they presented her with a cheque as a reward for her action.

New Wheels

|
Tiny Giants Theatre Company presented their latest play New Wheels to a hushed Year 11. It was a compelling and
hard-hitting production which delivered a chilling and powerful, road-safety message. It told the tragic tale of how two brothers are involved in a horrific car crash following a night out. The play demonstrated the consequences of reckless driving and not wearing a seat-belt and ended with one young person dead, one serving a ten-year jail sentence and another in a wheelchair, his “new wheels”. |

Memories are made of this

Members of the public were invited to submit a photograph which captured a key turning point in their life together with a piece of writing which documented that moment.
Vanessa Dube, MSM year 9 student, wrote about her memories of Zimbabwe and her work was selected from thousands of entries and will now be displayed at Leeds University before moving on to a major exhibition in London.
