EDUCATION IN SEXUALITY POLICY

The Governing Body of Mount St Mary’s recognises that the primary responsibility for the education of children rests with the parents of those children, but that the school has a role to play in assisting parents to carry out this responsibility. The Governing Body recognises that this is particularly true of the education of children in matters of sexuality. With this in mind, the school will address the education of its pupils in sexuality from the stand point of:

  1. Sexuality, male and female, is a gift of God which permeates the whole of our life and personality; it enables us to express the depth of our relationship with others on a physical, emotional and affective level and it allows us to become co-creators with God in bestowing the gift of life to our children.
  2. Mount St Mary’s is a Catholic school and all matters pertaining to sexuality will be taught in accordance with the teaching and moral norms of the Roman Catholic Faith.
  3. Education in Sexuality will include factual information on physical biological detail, according to the ability of the pupils, but it will be placed in the context of loving, caring relationships.
  4. Education in Sexuality will principally be taught in the Science and RE syllabus but no ‘Sexual Education’ lessons as such will be held. Education in Sexuality will be an integral part of the moral, physical, spiritual and cultural education of the pupils at Mount St Mary’s and as such there will be a cross-curricular input in developing a comprehensive and mature understanding and appreciation of sexuality.
  5. No provision has been made for pupils to be withdrawn from lessons though parents have the right to withdraw their children from those lessons where education in sexuality, apart from that stated in the NC is taught.

The Governors commend the above policy to the Headteacher and instruct the Headteacher to draw up and develop a scheme of teaching, within the guidelines provided by the CSE document ‘Education in Sexuality’, which will conform to this policy and develop in the pupils of Mount St Mary’s a mature Christian attitude to sexuality. Consultation with parents regarding the implementation of this policy will take place through the PTA.
